I began chess programming with assembler-only version and it was a major pain in the s$$!! Even with a good design you have to change a billion things even if you want to change a simple thing in some structures or practically anywhere. I don't say I'm an assembler guru but still developing was _a lot slower_ then with C, for example. But at best asm could be fastest but nowadays when you see a new set of commands every year and new scheduling rules and whatever, it is very hard to keep track on optimisation rules. Severi
