Was he really trying? I think that he could if he were to implement many of the
techniques discovered in recent years, but that would also mean doing a
significant rewrite, and perhaps he was just tired of the whole deal. Look at
how many programmers from when he started are still in the field. Not many. Of
course we still have those exceptional dinosaurs such as Ed and Koenig from the
stand-alone days and Bob from the mainframes, but the list is very very short.
Those guys will probably be complaining about problems in their programs on
their deathbeds, looking for that last bit of tweaking to eke out a half an Elo
point. :-) Lang also had a long record of being the best (and by a lot too), so
he may have also felt he had nothing left to prove.
