I let Shredder 7.04 and some other engines sit on it and they had no luck either, preferring Nd4 at ~+2.xx, but after feeding it the first moves, which they agreed on, the eval flew through the roof. It's the winner, no doubt about it. Here's some analysis by Shredder 7.04 and Fritz 8 for example at the beginning: New game 1rb2rk1/4R1p1/1pqn1pBp/3p4/5Q2/1NP3PP/6PK/4R3 w - - 0 1 Analysis by Shredder 7.04: 30.Be8 Rxe8 31.Rxe8+ Nxe8 32.Qxb8 Kf7 33.Ra1 Kg8 34.Nd4 Qc5 35.Ra8 Nd6 36.Ne6 Qc6 37.Qc7 +- (2.62) Depth: 16/39 143775kN New game 1rb2rk1/4R1p1/1pqn1pBp/3p4/5Q2/1NP3PP/6PK/4R3 w - - 0 1 Analysis by Fritz 8: 30.Be8 Rxe8 31.Rxe8+ Nxe8 32.Qxb8 Kf7 33.Re2 Qc7 34.Qa8 Qb7 35.Qa3 Bf5 36.Nd4 Be4 ± (1.28) Depth: 16/36 339350kN But after one feeds the first moves, which the engines agree with: 1.R1e6 Bxe6 2.Nd4 Qc4 3.Qxd6 Bxh3 (Bc8 allows Qxb8 simply) 4.Kxh3 [D]1r3rk1/4R1p1/1p1Q1pBp/3p4/2qN4/2P3PK/6P1/8 b - - 0 33 and now 4...Kh8 which the engines see as the best move despite the growing disastrous eval since 4...Qc8+ for example leads to 5.Nf5 Kh8 (5...Rb7 6.Qxd5 and 7.Rxb7) 6.Rxg7 Qxf5 (what else?) 7.Bxf5 Kxg7 8.Qc7+ Rf7 (8...Kg7 9.Qh7 mate) 9.Qxb8. After 4...Kh8 the engines see the size of the disaster: [D]1r3r1k/4R1p1/1p1Q1pBp/3p4/2qN4/2P3PK/6P1/8 w - - 0 34 Analysis by Shredder 7.04: 34.Nf5 Rfd8 35.Rb7 Qf1 36.Kh2 Rbc8 37.Qe7 Rd7 38.Rxd7 b5 39.Rxd5 Rxc3 +- (6.39) Depth: 13/35 17820kN Analysis by Fritz 8: 34.Nf5 Rfd8 35.Rb7 Qc8 36.Rxb8 Qxb8 37.Qe7 Rg8 38.Nxh6 Qc8+ 39.Bf5 Re8 40.Qf7 +- (6.44) Depth: 14/42 00:03:03 92560kN Perhaps Zappa didn't see it all, but that it played the best move, seems unquestionable. A good one to add to the combinations that even engines don't see easily. Albert
