Thanks to John Merlino, Dann and Dan and Ricardo for all the helpful advice!
I'm not sure yet what I'll get, I may wait a bit longer, as it appears the 64
bit Athlon is coming down in price with HP and Compaq, and no shared video
memory:)

And of course Steven...a little humour is always nice;-)

I figured shared video memory would take a hit, and it appears to be enough to
be concerned about it. For chess, (The Main Purpose) isn't too bad, but 20% does
look a bit ugly.

For games other than chess it looks like the loss of speed could be substantial
maybe 40-60% ouch!

I'm running a pretty old machine, an IBM Aptiva P-III 500 with 128 SDRAM with a
tiny 12Gig HD, 100MGH Bus and a lousy 8MB of Video, so it's time to seriously
consider a new machine! So even the Compaq I was considering looks good!:o)

Will a 64 bit Athlon boost my 32 bit ChessBase software, over a 32 bit machine
at the same Gigahertz, or might I actually lose some performance? Or will it
stay basically the same?

All informed opinions and good advice welcomed!

Terry
