You're absolutely right. A Palm + classic chessboard combo is now a really
attractive alternative.

For comparison, Mephisto Master is rated at 2200 ELO and cost at least 200$. If
you get an old Palm III (about 30$ on Ebay) and ChessTiger (15$), you then have
a 2100 ELO dedicated chess machine for less than 50$ (I've just done that ;)).
If you have a newer model, and HIARCS, ELO can go up around 2400-2500... And
things improve with each new generattion of Palm.

Thus I really don't see any future for the dedicated chess computer. They just
cost way too much for what they give, since you can buy a basic palm, dedicated
it to chess, and you have a stronger and more versatile engine for less money.
