A Palm + classic chessboard combo is now a really attractive alternative. For comparison, Mephisto Master is rated at 2200 ELO and cost at least 200$. If you get an old Palm III (about 30$ on Ebay) and ChessTiger (15$), you then have a 2100 ELO dedicated chess machine for less than 50$ (I've just done that ;)). If you have a newer model, and HIARCS, ELO can go up around 2400-2500... And things improve with each new generattion of Palm. Thus I really don't see any future for the dedicated chess computer. They just cost way too much for what they give, since you can buy a basic palm, dedicated it to chess, and you have a stronger and more versatile engine for less money.
