These players can't always wait until "free" progs have the same features of ChessBase products. It's not about money, it's about lifetime. Look at this: If you take the actual ChessBase Light Version for free, then you have a better tested product than the actual "free" amateur versions who are inventing the already known wheels in chess programs. CHESS is the main topic and NOT a BUTTON or a PROGRAM. For three decades the Germans of the Democratic Republic drove with cars out of plastic. Fine! That was real fun, but today nobody wants to develop such a car but all Germans from the East are driving veritable cars like Americans or Icelanders. This is a fair analogy of what is happening in computerchess. Why using the copy two years later if you can use the original that is on the market all over the world? But I may end here with the following knockout for all the "free" amateur products. You wait these two years for the "free" versions and then these authors are surprising you with the news that the too will now sell their "free" products because of all the work and energy that is in these products. Here the bell ring? You collect a group of real lovers for your product. They help you in the developping your product. Then you win a tournament and then you declare that you will now sell your product. Of course on your own and NOT into the pockets of the many helpers I guess. Now tell me if this is a better strategy than the honest business solution.
