Hello,

There are UCI engines, and there are UCI engines.

The Shredder UCI engine does not know anything about opening books, it only gets
positions and analyzes them. Therefore, there is no way to make it use its own
book, as it does not have one. The Shredder book is managed by the GUI (Shredder
Classic) alone.

For other engines, things may look different. Many engines, including UCI
engines (or Winboard engines, for that matter) have "built-in" book code, so
they can use their opening book without the help of a GUI. Examples are Spike or
SOS, among many (in fact: most) others. Usually, you just have to activate a UCI
option called "Own book" or "Use book" or something similar; in some, you may
have to set a flag in an ini-file.

I hope this helps!

Best regards - Munjong.
