SmarThink was freeware back in the days of version 0.17. It's written by Sergei Markov - a Russian student. Yes it's strong. I would say that it's very much a knowledge rich program that also used its knowledge to guide the search. In the games that I've seen it seems to play active chess and is happy to sacrifice material for positional advantages. I'd say it's an interesting engine that is definitely worth investigating. Steve PS I haven't used version 1.0, only version 0.17
