As long as the best line found does not end in a mate, it is of course possible that a deeper search will return a different score. If the best line found at dept N ends in a forced mate, however, a deeper search can obviously never return a forced mate in a *bigger* number of moves. The mate found at the shallower search remains a mate when you search one ply deeper. The opposite thing can of course happen. A deeper search may cause a shorter mate to be found. If a program displays mate in 11 when there is no forced mate in less than 14 moves, it has a bug. The bug may not be of great importance in practical play, but it remains a bug. Tord
