Surely it is just a defective reed switch under the d5 square, which can easily be replaced. If an entire rank or file goes dead, the problem has to be found by someone with a circuit diagram. regards L PS On second thoughts, maybe I'm assuming it is a non-pressure switch board. For pressure switch boards, a new 'mat' has to be fixed, it which case I don't like your chances. But you still have a nice manual chess set, just like *all* dedicated chess comps will one day be.
