In fact, my knowlege of other programming languages is limited. Writing a chess engine in BASIC will cost you about 50 Elo or so, compared to some other engine. If you are very familiar with BASIC, then that should be your choice for your first chess engine. It would be a mistake to try to learn to write a new language and learn to write a chess program at the same time, I think.
