It is simple
Here is an example:

rq2r1k1/5pbp/4pnp1/2NbN2n/1p3P2/1P4PP/PB3QBK/2RR4 w - -

The first r is black rook at a8
q is black queen at b8
2 is nothing at c8,d8
r is black rook at e8
1 is nothing at f8
k is black king at g8
1 is nothing at h8

5 is nothing at a7-e7
p is black pawn at f7
b is black bishop at g7
p is black pawn at h7

small letters are black and capital letters are white.

Programs like Fritz know to read it and this is the reason that humans use it.

You can use the edit command and select copy.
After it you goto Set position in Fritz and use the paste Fen command  and you
get the position
