I think it is not mainly a matter of strength, but about the right approach
to the game. As Anthony pointed out, too aggressive and ambitious play will
easily backfire. Instead of trying to find the strongest possible moves,
it is better to play extremely solid and boring chess, take no chances at
all, and exchange pieces whenever you have the chance. Perhaps this
technique is less effective against engines which use a trade down bonus
(neither Fruit nor Glaurung has such a bonus).

Here's a game against Fruit 2.2 (at 5 minutes/40 moves). Notice the pawn
sacrifice at move 2. In return for the pawn, black gets the queens exchanged,
which makes the game much easier to win. Objectively, 2... e5 is of course
a weak move, but it is the type of move which works well in odds games
against computers.
