Typing in the location of each piece is a pain in the butt. Also, people have thousands of these positions collected, and this is more compact yet human-decipherable. Forsyth notation (what FEN is based on) has been used for over a hundred years. You'll get used to it. :-) Maybe someone else will provide it, but I think you should just try to read it. I explained it in my last post, it's very easy. Start at a8 and go across, then down. Dave
