challenger 7 had, as far as i remember, no check if you move is legal.
in fact you could have played illegal moves such as queen d1-f7 mate
if f7 would have been protected by another piece.
also there was a very short mate possible against this machine.
i think with legal play arround < mate in 10 from opening.
the spracklen program at this early stage had, as far as i remember
it, no iterative search.
the search went from ply 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 to 5.
todays chess program make a one ply search, than they make a 2 ply search.
than they make a 3 ply search. as far as i know.
the best thing is the display that it computes.
looks like the cylons from a SF movie.
