I don't agree; this would make PGN less readable by (human) eye, something I do
quite frequently. (It is a standard whose output doesn't look like that of a
standard, if you know what I mean).

One big omission in all the standards, which I'm amazed nobody else seems to
have mentioned, is internationalisation (including Unicode support). The general
assumption is that the piece letters will be English piece letters.
