Go up one level in this thread

its true

today even 3 months is a long time for a PC program to remain number one

the old computers at least remained on top for a year until the next WC

but back then i think people bought the computers not so much to play one
against the other..but to play against the computers themselves

today very few play against the engines but rather pit one engine against the
next and they themselves do not play

to this day..i fail to see the interest in this..but many have this interest

i believe this difference is due to how one begins their interest in chess from
the beginning

if they start by playing chess then the interest in computer chess is mainly to
play the computer

when you and i first learned the moves there were no computers
we played against humans

i played first against my friends and then in tournaments and then
correspondence when i began my professional career

when the dedicated computers arrived i played against them

but today i think many start their interest in chess with the Engines and from
day one they play one engine against the next

IMO those that do not play the game themselves but only one engine against the
next are missing the essence and beauty of the game which no other game can
provide

to play chess and use your own mind..even if you lose..is better then to not
play at all and only watch idly as a fan watching a baseball game

Random Thoughts Regards
Steve
